Emoticons are getting out of hand
May 19th, 2009Remember the days when the only emoticons around were simple smiley faces?

Now, chat clients have learned to parse these characters and convert them into animated GIFs, that relic of mid-to-late 90s web design. There are ninjas, and pirates, and cowboys, and Pacman chasing ghosts, and who knows what else. What emotion is Pacman supposed to express, anyway?
Today, I had the shortest chat I’ve ever had with a friend. The chat went as follows:

(6:12:22 PM) melanie: lol, i really wanted to see what that looked like
(6:12:32 PM) ren: hahaha you could have IMed yourself
(6:14:08 PM) melanie: but its cute!
(6:14:31 PM) melanie: ~@~
(6:14:36 PM) melanie: alright, i gtg study
(6:14:38 PM) melanie: see you later!
I hate emoticons.
